Based on announcements available through October 27, 2026. Lineage 2 BASIC is NCSoft’s Korean server initiative designed to restore the importance of gear, Adena, crafting and cooperation between players. Its launch was scheduled for October 28, 2026. This is a review of pre-launch announcements, not a hands-on evaluation of the live servers.
Note: an equivalent European or American release had not been confirmed at the time. Final rules may have changed following launch.

What is Lineage 2 BASIC?
NCSoft did not present BASIC as an exact recreation of old Chronicles such as C4 or Interlude. Instead, the design focuses on three principles. Standard means starting with basic gear; Simple means removing unnecessary layers of progression; and Slow is meant to make upgrades gradual and meaningful.
The Falchion is a fitting symbol: a modest weapon whose acquisition and enhancement may once again feel worthwhile. The important question is whether the journey is engaging, not just longer.
No-Grade and D-Grade gear: will drops matter again?
Characters are expected to begin with No-Grade equipment and spend a meaningful stage of their journey working toward D-Grade. Weapons and armor earned through hunting or bought from NPC vendors were described as tradable by default, subject to server-specific exceptions.
That could make even an unwanted drop valuable. A weapon your class cannot use might be sold for Adena to fund another upgrade. But making a weapon harder to obtain is not automatically an improvement: drop rates, prices and enchantment costs will determine whether it feels rewarding.
Dolls, Collections and Hidden Power are being removed
One of the biggest announcements came on October 26. NCSoft said BASIC would omit Dolls, Collections, Hidden Power, pattern systems and some accessory and gem-related equipment slots.
Removing these progression layers may lower the number of systems a player must develop simultaneously. It does not erase power differences: class, level, skills, equipment and playtime still matter. The developer also left open the possibility of adding some systems back under different conditions later.
To me, this change matters more than simply lowering rates. NCSoft is removing entire progression systems instead of just slowing them down.
Quest progression and hunting zones
Pre-launch information described an initial series of learning quests through the third class transfer, followed by greater emphasis on hunting in open zones. This is not the same leveling system used in the oldest Chronicles.
Promotional material showed Cruma Tower, Dragon Valley, Sea of Spores, Giant’s Cave and Tower of Insolence. One of the biggest unknowns is whether parties will be truly useful. Tanks, healers, support and damage dealers should benefit from cooperation if the goal is to revive the social experience.
Common Craft: crystals and item creation
Common Craft is meant to turn hunting resources into valuable items. The preview included Soulshots, Soul Crystals and Spellbooks as potential crafting outputs. Hunting, gathering materials, crafting and trading could once again form a meaningful loop.
Because multiple classes may use the system, longtime players have a valid question: what unique role will Dwarves retain? Their identity has historically revolved around Spoil, recipes and manufacturing. Without complete recipes and limitations, it would be premature to say their specialization is gone.
Adena, player trading and auctions
NCSoft wants Adena to matter in purchasing, exchange and auctions. A functioning MMORPG economy gives players different ways to progress: some farm resources, some craft, some hunt valuable equipment, and some trade.
The announcements mentioned buying certain items with Adena. However, that does not establish that every relevant cash-shop product is available without real-money spending. The balance will depend on Adena supply, trading restrictions and paid advantages.
Raid Bosses, epic bosses, clans and sieges
The previews prominently featured familiar bosses including Queen Ant, Zaken, Baium, Frintezza and Antharas, as well as organized clan battles. If their drops retain value, these encounters could support cooperation, trading and PvP over important locations.
However, a familiar boss in a promotional image does not guarantee identical mechanics to the old Chronicles. Exact access rules, schedules, loot and balance were not fully documented at the time. It also remains important to test whether supposedly fairer sieges really give smaller clans a chance.
Gludin, Gludio and Giran: the three announced servers
The campaign originally focused on Gludin. The October 14 L2 Talk later added Gludio and Giran. All three were scheduled to open on October 28, 2026 at 20:00 KST, equivalent to 12:00 in Madrid.
Why did the +7 Falchion and +5 armor change?
Early promotional materials offered a +7 Falchion and +5 Bronze Armor. Reports covering the subsequent October 19 and 21 announcements said both rewards were adjusted to +0. The change aligns better with a server built around meaningful early upgrades, but it does not prove that the entire economy will be balanced.
Bartz: the new Lineage 2 class
Bartz is named after the historic Bartz Liberation War. The October 26 showcase featured twelve representative skills, with a fighting style built around daggers, mobility, linked attacks and additional effects.
Light Soul, Lumitrix and Ramsheart
Early translations describe stacks of an effect provisionally referred to as Light Soul, which can interact with offensive and defensive abilities. Lumitrix is associated with offensive bonuses and counters, while Ramsheart was shown as a frontal attack that may also grant defensive benefits to allies.
These names are provisional translations. Complete damage values, cooldowns and trigger rates were not available in the pre-launch analysis. There is no verified basis to claim that using stacks defensively necessarily prevents using them offensively later.
Bartz was not exclusive to BASIC: the class was also announced for other Korean Essence servers. This did not establish an immediate Western release.
Monetization: will BASIC be pay to win?
NCSoft announced a 29,700 KRW starter package limited to one purchase per account. Since the complete list of contents was not available in the preliminary information reviewed, it would be wrong to call the package clearly pay to win or purely cosmetic.
The relevant questions are whether the items can also be earned through gameplay, whether they are tradable, and how much they speed up progression. Monetization will be a major test of BASIC’s philosophy.
Questions that still need answers
| Topic | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Auto-hunting | Whether active play and parties have meaningful advantages. |
| Experience and loot rates | Whether progression is rewarding or merely slower. |
| PvP and sieges | Whether competition is accessible and balanced. |
| Cash shop | Whether real-money purchases undermine the economy. |
| Future updates | Whether removed progression layers return over time. |
Will BASIC launch in Europe or the Americas?
The announced opening was for Korea. At this article’s information cutoff, no equivalent European or American date was confirmed. A future international adaptation may also differ from the Korean version.
Conclusion: classic Lineage was about more than slow leveling
What interests me most about BASIC is not simply slower leveling. It is the attempt to remove secondary systems and make equipment, Adena, trading and parties matter again. To me, classic Lineage 2 was never memorable just because progress was difficult: it was a world where other players mattered.
If BASIC restores that connection between effort, economy and community, it could have lasting appeal. If it only reduces rates while keeping the same monetization problems, it may end up being a slower version of modern Lineage 2.
